Community Morgue Construction & Mosque Improvements in Kesser Kunda

Supporting dignified burial services and inclusive worship across Kesser Kunda and five neighbouring villages.

CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED: Support Dignity in burial and inclusion in worship

The Fuladu Foundation is supporting the community of Kesser Kunda to ensure dignified burial practices, improve inclusive access to the mosque, particularly for women, and secure the space through proper fencing.

Project Overview

In Kesser Kunda and the surrounding area, there is currently no mortuary facility available to serve local communities. As a result, families are often forced to transport deceased relatives to distant locations during periods of bereavement, creating additional hardship at already difficult moments.

Following consultations with residents and local leaders, the community identified the construction of a modest morgue adjacent to the village mosque as a key priority. The facility is expected to serve not only Kesser Kunda, but also five neighbouring villages, representing a combined population of more than 3,000 people.

The consultations also highlighted the need to improve the mosque environment through the expansion of the prayer space, including a dedicated area for women, as well as the installation of protective fencing around the mosque and morgue compound to enhance safety, dignity, and organization.

Given the limited access to electricity in the area, the project incorporates a simple solar-supported cooling solution, complemented by locally accessible ice-based preservation methods to support essential morgue functions.

The Fuladu Foundation is supporting this initiative as a single, integrated community project developed in close coordination with local residents and village leadership.

Integrated Project Components

The project brings together several complementary components designed to function as a single, coherent intervention:

⚪ Construction of a Community Morgue

A modest facility designed to allow families to prepare their loved ones within the village, in accordance with cultural and religious practices.

🕌 Mosque Expansion (Women’s Section)

Creation of a dedicated prayer space to enable women to participate more fully and comfortably in religious life.

🧱 Fencing of the Mosque and Morgue Compound

Installation of protective fencing to ensure the cleanliness, safety, and dignity of the space, and to prevent animals from entering the area.

☀️ Solar-Powered Cooling System

Provision of a simple, sustainable solution to support short-term preservation of bodies in a context with limited access to electricity.

Why This Matters

This project is about ensuring dignity in moments of loss.

By enabling families to prepare their loved ones within the village, it reduces the emotional and logistical burden that currently accompanies funeral arrangements.

It also strengthens the role of the mosque as a central place of worship and community life, while promoting greater inclusion through the creation of a dedicated space for women.

Beyond infrastructure, this initiative supports the preservation of cultural and spiritual practices, and reinforces the sense of cohesion and respect within the community.
