Bajiran is a rural village in Kombo Central District of The Gambia’s West Coast Region, located just a few kilometers from the border with Senegal. With a population of approximately 400 residents (mainly from the Jola and Fula communities) Bajiran is a close-knit and resilient community, yet it has long faced limited access to essential services.
For many years, the most urgent challenge was reliable access to clean water, which placed a daily burden on families and affected health and well-being. Beyond water, the community continues to face pressing needs in education, with an under-resourced school, as well as health services, where the local facility lacks critical equipment and emergency transport. Community members have also identified the rehabilitation of key communal infrastructure, including the mosque, as an important priority for social cohesion and spiritual life.
These realities are why Bajiran became the focus of the Fuladu Foundation’s first pilot engagement, working with the community to address immediate priorities while laying the groundwork for longer-term development.
